LASERC identifies TCN, DisCo bottlenecks limiting Lagos electricity supply

The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) has pinpointed transmission and distribution bottlenecks between the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Distribution Companies (DisCos) as barriers to boosting Lagos' electricity supply. During an on-site monitoring tour of crucial TCN facilities like the Akangba and Ijora substations, the commission revealed during an investigation into reports that about 200 megawatts (MW) of electricity were not reaching Lagos consumers.

LASERC's Engineering and Standards Executive Member, Engr. Adekunle Olapade, clarified during an interview with Nairametrics that the commission's assessment aimed to ascertain whether the issue stemmed from TCN's transmission capability or the ability of DisCos to accommodate more electricity. Olapade revealed that both TCN and DisCos possess the required capacity but that obstacles between the two entities need addressing.

Although TCN has transmission capacity, DisCos have the capability to absorb more electricity; however, distribution infrastructure and system protection issues remain impediments to absorbing additional electricity from the transmission network. TCN has also raised concerns about frequent tripping, particularly during the rainy season.

To enhance Lagos' electricity supply, LASERC emphasizes the need for significant investments in distribution infrastructure and improved capacities of DisCos' systems.
