Land guards terrorising Ogbojo residents – Association alleges

Residents of New Ogbojo in Accra have called upon President John Dramani Mahama and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to address what they describe as ongoing attacks, threats, and forced evictions allegedly perpetrated by armed land guards. The Landlords Association of Ogbojo reported that these activities have left families in fear and disrupted their daily lives.

Allegations include the interruption of electricity and water supplies, removal of residents' belongings and demolition of apartments, as well as threats to schoolchildren and destruction of their learning materials. Mr Leslie Gyan, a member of the association, stated during a press conference that residents have resided in the community since 1990 and 1992 after legally acquiring their lands.

The association expressed concern over what it called persistent harassment, intimidation, and forced evictions allegedly carried out by armed land guards employed by Johnson and Lomotey. These individuals claimed that the police could not intervene due to "the powers that be" and other influential figures in society. Elderly residents and families have been particularly affected, with concerns about the safety of their homes and properties growing.

Mr Gyan reported the incidents to the Madina Police Station and raised the issue with various departments at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, but no action was taken. The association also accused a man named Commander Awal Muhammad of having an interest in the land and called for an investigation into his involvement.

They emphasized that the individuals involved continued to harass residents without proper court orders or judicial decisions authorizing their eviction. The association vowed to pursue lawful means to protect the rights of its members and other residents of New Ogbojo.
