Lagos: Police arrest man in viral video beating toddler for failing to read

A Nigerian man featured in a viral video brutally assaulting a toddler for his inability to read has been apprehended by the police. The graphic footage, which rapidly spread across social media platforms, depicted the suspect striking the child repeatedly on the head and body with a charger cable. This incident ignited widespread public condemnation, prompting numerous Nigerians to demand his arrest and prosecution.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) confirmed the suspect's arrest on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following a report regarding the incident and subsequent communication with the child's mother. According to the agency, the mother had initially reported the matter to the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency, which subsequently led to the apprehension of the alleged perpetrator.

The statement further noted that the survivor and her mother were promptly referred to General Hospital for urgent medical care and further evaluation. Investigations into the incident are currently under way.
