KLIA remains Asia-Pacific’s most connected megahub, fourth globally, according to OAG index

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has maintained its position as the world's fourth most connected international airport and the most connected megahub in the Asia-Pacific region, according to OAG's 2026 Megahubs Index. The airport's capacity has expanded by 6.9%, driven by an enhanced airline network. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani attributes KLIA's global standing to the robustness and breadth of its aviation network, supported by airline partners, airport staff, and industry stakeholders.

However, Ghani emphasized that KLIA's growth extends beyond adding more destinations, as it requires a seamless passenger experience along with sufficient capacity. The airport has welcomed seven new scheduled airlines and nine new routes, including connections to Riyadh, Algeria, and Jinan. Malaysia Airlines has also bolstered connectivity with Japan via a new direct Fukuoka-Kuala Lumpur service.

MAHB plans to further strengthen KLIA's global position with the addition of Gulf Air, Hainan Airlines, ZIPAIR, and Thai Vietjet, along with a return of Lufthansa in October with five weekly flights between Frankfurt and Kuala Lumpur. Recent enhancements at KLIA include upgraded check-in and self-service bag-drop facilities, improved traffic management via the Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS), an e-hailing system at Terminal 1, additional passenger trolleys, complimentary wheelchairs, baby strollers, family-friendly facilities, a "Calm Room," and a "Harimau Playground" at Terminal 2. These developments are aimed at connecting Malaysia with more destinations and travelers worldwide.
