Karnataka homestay owner’s arrest over US woman’s rape illegal: Supreme Court

The Karnataka government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate fraudulent insurance claims, following Supreme Court instructions. This decision came about on September 22, 2026, when the Home Department issued a directive in line with the Supreme Court's ruling in SLP (Civil). The SIT, chaired by an Inspector General of Police (IGP), will have a Superintendent of Police from the CID, a Deputy Superintendent of Police nominated by the DG&IGP, and three police inspectors also nominated by the DG&IGP.

The team has been granted jurisdiction over the entire state of Karnataka, and its investigators are empowered to provide final reports to the relevant courts under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. The SIT will operate under the supervision of the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) at Police Headquarters in Bengaluru.

All insurance companies' complaints about fraudulent claims will be forwarded to the SIT for investigation by the DG&IGP, who will also allocate the necessary personnel and resources. The government order mandates that the SIT expedite its investigations and submit reports to the government through the DG&IGP without undue delay.

The team will also provide regular updates on the progress of its investigations to the DG&IGP via the ADGP (Law and Order).
