Japan's Takaichi, Trump Confirm Ties Ahead of U.S.-China Talks

New York, Sept. 22 (Jiji Press) – Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed the robust relationship between their nations prior to President Trump's scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Over the course of a 35-minute conversation, Takaichi and Trump discussed strategies to further strengthen the Japan-U.S. alliance, with a focus on bolstering cooperation in economic security, particularly in sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and critical minerals.

During the discussion, Takaichi addressed the International Criminal Court (ICC), a matter of contention for Trump, who has urged member states to withdraw from the Hague-based organization. Takaichi expressed her backing for the ICC, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law, according to sources who accompanied her during her U.S. tour. Both leaders engaged in a "frank" exchange, as reported by those present.

At the outset of their meeting, Takaichi underscored the gravity of the discussions, stating, "In an era marked by heightened global security concerns, including in Asia, we will demonstrate the strength of the Japan-U.S. alliance to the world." President Trump commended the Takaichi administration, stating that Japan is "doing well" and asserting that Takaichi will be considered one of the greatest prime ministers in the country's history.

The two leaders also agreed to advance efforts aimed at enhancing the deterrence and response capabilities of their nations' alliance and to proceed with the implementation of the bilateral tariff agreement in a timely manner.
