Israel’s 6th submarine to arrive as Navy plans major fleet expansion

The Israeli navy is advancing towards a semi-autonomous fleet, potentially even nearing full autonomy, according to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Recent reports suggest the IDF has been employing autonomous sea vehicles in recent years, though the exact timeline for deploying entire fleets remains uncertain. Elbit Systems, a leading Israeli firm, has been at the forefront of developing such technologies.

Among its notable creations is the 12-meter Seagull autonomous surface vessel, capable of patrolling offshore infrastructure for up to four days while incorporating mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, maritime security, electronic warfare, and other advanced systems.

While many nations like France, Singapore, and the Netherlands are also transitioning their navies towards increased autonomy, the IDF asserts its current level of robot and autonomy usage surpasses these countries. The urgency for robots and autonomous operations is highlighted by the impracticality of lengthy sea voyages for human crews and the global naval threats Israel faces from Turkey, Iran, Houthi rebels in Yemen, and others.

To secure maritime national security interests, Israel anticipates the need for a larger fleet in the future. However, the IDF does not foresee an increase in staffing for additional ships, leading to a strategic shift towards fewer human soldiers per vessel, aiming for a future where robots and autonomous systems handle most operations, potentially even maintenance.

Moreover, Israel must also contend with the possibility of enemy forces employing robots and autonomous systems, presenting challenges such as land-to-sea and sea-to-sea attacks. Additionally, the IDF acknowledges the threat of countries like China, Russia, and others potentially cutting underwater cables—a vulnerability Israel is actively working to mitigate.

The country is committed to expanding its defenses against such cable-cutting threats, which have been reported in the Baltic Sea near Britain, Norway, and other international locations.
