Iran war widens as Hormuz, Saudi oil routes face new pressure

Diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing Iran war persisted at the United Nations on Tuesday, as the conflict spread across the region. Iran threatened further attacks, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a critical pressure point and Iran-aligned Houthi forces advancing in Yemen. US President Donald Trump, in a speech to the UN General Assembly, warned he could "annihilate" Iran if no deal was reached, though he also indicated that an agreement may be possible.

Trump's remarks were dismissed as "propaganda" by Iran's Armed Forces, which stated they remained prepared to launch "more severe, crushing, and unpredictable blows on the aggressors." Despite the escalating tensions, US and Iranian representatives continued negotiations through mediators at the UN General Assembly. US envoy Steve Witkoff reported that lengthy discussions had taken place between the two sides, with mediators continuing their efforts.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani during diplomatic talks, as Gulf states sought a solution to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz while avoiding further escalation with Iran. The strait, vital for global oil and gas shipments, has been a major source of concern since the conflict began.

Saudi Arabia has restarted operations at its East-West oil pipeline, providing an alternative export route, although initial shipments from the Red Sea port of Yanbu are expected to be at reduced volumes.
