Iran flights to Baghdad, Muscat cancelled as expanded US sanctions take effect

On September 23, Iran's civil aviation authorities have announced the cancellation of flights from Tehran to Baghdad and Muscat due to the expansion of US sanctions. The news agency Tasnim reported that Baghdad and Muscat airports would no longer accept Iranian flights, while Istanbul-based international flights would continue as scheduled. Iran's aviation authorities are reportedly in discussions to reroute flights from Baghdad to Najaf, a popular destination for Iranian pilgrims.

Negotiations with Oman are also underway, though it remains unclear if the cancellation will be enforced. In Iraq, the government has yet to make an official decision, but a senior government official told AFP that Baghdad would comply with the ban. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Iranian airlines would face difficulties operating as of today due to the new sanctions.

The Iranian aviation sector has been targeted by various sanctions for years, and Iran Air, along with Mahan Air, are the two main providers offering international routes.

The restrictions have further complicated Iranians' ability to travel abroad or return to their country. Georgia had already barred Iranian carriers, and Mahan Air suspended services to Turkey at the request of the Turkish government. The restrictions were imposed following Israeli-American strikes on Iran in February, which led to the complete closure of the country's airspace. Since then, travel has resumed partially, but only Iranian carriers are allowed to facilitate passenger departures from Iran.
