iPhone 18 Pro vs. iPhone Duo: Comparing Apple’s New Pro Phone Against Its First Foldable

Apple has unveiled two of its most advanced smartphones yet: the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo. While both are premium devices, they cater to different user preferences and needs. The iPhone 18 Pro is a powerhouse with top-tier camera capabilities, while the iPhone Duo offers a unique foldable design, making it a foldable phone debut for Apple.

The iPhone 18 Pro boasts a triple rear camera setup - a 48-megapixel wide, ultrawide, and telephoto lens. Its standout feature is the variable aperture that allows users to control the amount of light entering the sensor, enhancing low-light photography and overall image quality. Additionally, the phone has a larger vapor chamber design that helps keep the device cool during heavy use. The 18 Pro is priced at $1,199 for the 256GB model, making it more affordable compared to the Duo.

On the other hand, the iPhone Duo presents an entirely different approach. Closed, it resembles a passport with rounded corners on the upper and lower right, and flat titanium sides. Its compact 5.4-inch cover display offers a comfortable viewing experience for everyday tasks. When opened, the Duo expands to reveal a 7.6-inch OLED screen, perfect for multimedia consumption.

However, it sacrifices the telephoto lens found in the Pro model, opting for a dual 48-megapixel wide and ultrawide camera system with a 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom. The Duo also forgoes the variable aperture feature found in the 18 Pro.

The Duo's most innovative aspect is its foldable design. Despite its unique form, it maintains a slim 0.2-inch thickness and supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling and interactions. Unlike the Pro model, the Duo does not have Face ID but rather a side fingerprint sensor for unlocking. Both phones share the IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

In terms of performance, both devices are powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip, which is built with a 2-nanometer process, offering significant speed improvements and better thermal management. As for battery life, the iPhone 18 Pro lasts up to 24 hours under normal use, while the Duo is rated for up to 44 hours of video playback when closed, and 31 hours when open. Apple claims the Duo charges to 50% in 15 minutes with a 35-watt wireless MagSafe charger, although further testing is needed to confirm these claims.

Both phones have similar selfie camera setups, with the 18 Pro featuring an 18-megapixel camera and the Duo using a 12-megapixel camera on the cover display and an under-display FaceTime camera on the main display. Interestingly, the Duo can utilize its rear 48-megapixel camera as a selfie camera when the device is unfolded. Ultimately, the choice between these two flagship phones will depend on whether users prioritize advanced camera features and a sleek, traditional design (18 Pro) or a groundbreaking foldable experience (Duo).
