“Important for me to be close to my family”: Ex-Man United ace explains decision to rip up contract

Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has announced that he is terminating his contract with German club Wolfsburg, citing his desire to be closer to his family in Denmark. Eriksen joined Wolfsburg in September 2025 after leaving United as a free agent. During his time at the club, he made 34 appearances, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists.

However, his contributions were not enough to prevent Wolfsburg from suffering relegation from the Bundesliga. In June, Eriksen suffered a cardiac scare on the pitch while playing for Denmark against Ukraine and has not featured in a competitive match since. Wolfsburg Managing Director Dieter Hecking stated that the decision to let Eriksen leave was made with his consent, allowing him the freedom to pursue this personal matter.

Eriksen expressed his gratitude towards the club and wished them success in their return to the Bundesliga. He also thanked everyone who supported him during his time at the club, stating that his experience there will be fondly remembered.
