IFC Invests In New Accra Hotel

IFC, a World Bank Group institution, has provided long-term financing to PLP Properties Ltd. for the development of a Hampton by Hilton hotel in Accra. The new 170-room property is projected to create 990 direct and indirect jobs, including 200 permanent positions. This expansion of midscale accommodation in Ghana is expected to bolster the country's tourism sector and contribute to employment and economic activity.

The hotel will be situated near Accra International Airport, marking Hilton's first venture in Ghana and one of the first Hampton by Hilton properties in West Africa. PLP Properties Ltd., the project's developer, emphasized that the hotel would enhance Accra's hospitality scene, generate employment, support local suppliers, and cater to both business and leisure travelers.

IFC's Executive Director, Jean-Louis Feghali, highlighted the significance of IFC's support in adhering to international sustainability standards for the project.

Nathalie Kouassi Akon, IFC's Division Director for West Africa Gulf of Guinea, stressed the potential of investing in quality, sustainable accommodation to strengthen Ghana's tourism sector and create jobs across the broader economy. The hotel is anticipated to source goods and services from local Ghanaian businesses, thereby bolstering domestic value chains and ensuring that more economic benefits from tourism remain within Ghana.

The project aims to attain EDGE Advanced certification, IFC's green building standard. The Hampton by Hilton Accra Airport is being designed to consume at least 40% less energy and 20% less water than traditional buildings, while also minimizing carbon emissions from construction materials. These efficiencies are expected to reduce operational costs and set a higher standard for resource-efficient development in Ghana's hospitality industry.
