I signed Saudi Pro League contract to secure my grandchildren’s future – Reijnders

Dutch footballer Tijjani Reijnders has revealed that his move to the Saudi Pro League was primarily driven by the desire to ensure financial security for his family. The 28-year-old midfielder, who transferred from Manchester City to Al Qadsiah in August 2026 for a staggering £51 million and a reported four-year contract worth around €100 million, made the decision clear during a recent media appearance.

Reijnders emphasized that this significant financial move would allow him to safeguard the future of his grandchildren, explaining, "It's money for generations of my family." While the financial aspect was undoubtedly a key motivator, the midfielder also cited tactical dissatisfaction as a factor in his departure from the Etihad Stadium.

Reijnders joined Al Qadsiah from AC Milan in summer 2025 and initially played under former manager Pep Guardiola, making 50 appearances and winning two major trophies. However, he later expressed his preference for a box-to-box role, which led to his departure after just one season. Reijnders highlighted that the Saudi Pro League offers a standard of play that is on par with, if not superior to, the Dutch Eredivisie.

He encouraged critics to witness matches firsthand before drawing conclusions about the league's quality. The midfielder is set to remain with Al Qadsiah for three to four years before potentially returning to European football.
