How Vanderbilt volleyball, in second season, is undefeated entering SEC play

Vanderbilt's women's volleyball team is making waves as it enters its second season of competition, setting its sights on an undefeated record before the start of SEC play. Having finished the previous season with a 9-18 overall record and 3-12 mark in the conference, the Commodores have made significant strides under the guidance of head coach Anders Nelson.

Nelson, a former coach of the Kentucky program, came to Vanderbilt with the goal of building a strong foundation for the team. After the team's disappointing performance in the SEC Tournament the previous year, Nelson asked his players to rate their happiness on a scale of 1 to 10. Many responded with 7s, 8s, and 9s, signaling a newfound sense of hope and enthusiasm.

The team's offensive prowess has been a major factor in their success, ranking fourth nationally in hitting percentage, assists per set, kills per set, and aces per set. The addition of transfer setter Avery Scoggins, along with the progress of players such as outside hitter Reese Animashaun and middle blocker Kayla Dunlap, has contributed to their offensive growth.

Vanderbilt's staff has adjusted their goals for the season, raising the bar after seeing the team's potential. A strong showing in SEC play could secure the team's spot in the NCAA Tournament, a remarkable achievement for a program in its second season. With nine of the returning players from the 2024 redshirt season and six new faces, the Vanderbilt volleyball team is poised for a bright future.
