How much will Chuseok cost Korean households this year?

This year's Chuseok holiday in South Korea brings with it a familiar question for many households: How much will the festivities cost? The celebration, typically marked by family reunions and feasts, also involves expenses that can quickly accumulate. From gifts and food to fuel and highway costs, the financial impact can be significant.

A breakdown of the anticipated spending reveals that one of the biggest expenses is undoubtedly food. Traditional dishes and seasonal ingredients are staples of Chuseok meals, often prepared for both family gatherings and ancestral rites known as charye. While more households are opting out of the latter due to changing family dynamics, the preparation of charye remains a substantial cost.

According to a survey by the Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations, the cost of preparing a charye meal for a family of four averaged 313,089 won (approximately $231.54) this year. This represents a slight decrease of 2.3 percent compared to the previous year. The decline can be attributed to lower prices for essential items such as fruit, seafood, and processed foods, which have helped to offset rising costs.
