Larry Hill's coaching journey began at Jourdanton in 1989, where he took over a Class 3A program with a small enrollment. Hill, then 28 years old, brought a wealth of ideas to the program and quickly made an impact. He earned Jourdanton's first win in his coaching tenure, a 7-0 victory against Cole. The team continued its success, going 7-4 the following season and earning a playoff spot.

Jourdanton's 1992 graduate Tony Trevino recalled Hill's influence, noting that everyone in the community was energized by his enthusiasm and his ability to create a positive environment. After two successful seasons at Jourdanton, Hill moved on to Smithson Valley, where he continued his success. He and Jim Streety are currently tied for seventh place on the local list for most career wins. Hill's Rangers have won two Class 5A Division I state championships in the past two years, and the team is currently ranked No. 1 in the state in the 5A Division I rankings.
