Harvey Weinstein set to be sentenced for sexual assault after 6-year legal odyssey

Harvey Weinstein, the 74-year-old former Hollywood producer, is set to be sentenced on Wednesday for sexual assault after a six-year legal ordeal. The convicted sex offender faces up to 25 years in prison for assaulting a former TV production assistant named Miriam Haley in 2006 at his Manhattan apartment. Weinstein has already served over six years in prison after two previous trials, during which his case was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Miriam Haley, who testified in multiple trials, is expected to speak at Weinstein's sentencing, according to her lawyer Gloria Allred. Weinstein, who denies the allegations, will also address the court. The Oscar-winning producer was originally sentenced to 23 years in prison for assaulting Haley and raping an aspiring actress, Jessica Mann, in 2013.

However, New York's highest court overturned those verdicts in 2024 due to prejudicial testimony from other alleged victims. After a second trial, Weinstein was convicted of first-degree criminal sex act for assaulting Haley, while another jury could not reach a verdict on a rape charge involving Mann. The Manhattan prosecutors have requested a sentence of 20 years, which would keep Weinstein in prison until his late 80s.

Weinstein's lawyers have not disclosed their sentencing request. He is currently awaiting resentencing in a separate rape case in Los Angeles, where the California appeals court upheld his 2022 conviction but overturned his original 16-year sentence because the judge considered his New York convictions as aggravating factors. Weinstein is currently housed at a medical unit for jail inmates at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he suffers from chronic myeloid leukemia, diabetes, and other health issues.
