Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 15 years for New York sexual assault

On Wednesday, New York judge Curtis Farber sentenced former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a former production assistant named Miriam Haley in 2006. This verdict came after Weinstein's retrial last year, during which he was found guilty of one count of first-degree criminal sexual act for the 2006 assault. The 2020 conviction against Weinstein was overturned by New York's highest court in 2024, citing a lack of a fair trial.

Weinstein, 74, was initially convicted in 2020 of sexually assaulting Haley and raping actress Jessica Mann, receiving a 23-year sentence. However, his conviction was later overturned by the court due to fairness concerns. At his 2025 retrial, Weinstein was convicted of the Haley assault charge, acquitted of assaulting model Kaja Sokola, and deadlocked on Mann's rape allegation. Prosecutors later dropped the rape charge against Mann, who later declined to testify in a subsequent trial.

The conviction marks a significant milestone for the #MeToo movement, as over 100 women, including renowned actresses, accused Weinstein of misconduct. Weinstein has consistently denied all allegations of non-consensual sex or assault. In a statement, Weinstein's spokesman maintained his innocence, expressing disagreement with the 15-year sentence imposed by Judge Farber.
