Handelskonflikt: US-Regierung: Zusatzzölle gegen China erneut aufgeschoben

The US government has delayed additional tariffs on Chinese goods for another two months, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. This announcement came during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, during a three-day state visit. Bessent confirmed the extension of the Busan Agreement, which President Trump and Chinese President Xi had agreed to in Busan, South Korea, last October.

The trade conflict between the two countries had escalated in April 2025 when their governments imposed tariffs of over 100 percent on each other. Instead of the scheduled date of November 10, the delay now extends until January 10, Bessent said. The postponement provides time to assess potential economic measures. Several meetings with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng preceded this agreement.

The Chinese side has not yet commented on the announced delay. The issue of export controls, part of the Busan Agreement, has further strained relations between the two economic giants. While the Busan meeting averted the introduction of additional export controls by China on rare earths and related technology, China still controls the export of key raw materials such as rare earths.

Exports require lengthy approval processes. Meanwhile, the US continues to restrict access to advanced technology, such as the latest computer chips for artificial intelligence (AI) development. The delay in tariffs coincides with the beginning of Xi's three-day state visit to Washington, where issues of AI security and other global conflicts like the Iran War and Russia's invasion of Ukraine are expected to be discussed.
