Grocer Wegmans to invest in supply chain upgrades

Supermarket chain Wegmans intends to invest in enhancing its supply chain infrastructure with a new refrigerated distribution center in Rochester, New York. The facility will cater to perishable goods such as fresh produce, meat, seafood, deli and restaurant food. This strategic move is part of Wegmans' broader efforts to streamline operations, minimize dependence on external providers, elevate customer service, and facilitate future expansion, as outlined in a company press release. No specific start or completion dates for the construction have been disclosed.

Additionally, Wegmans plans to relocate its return center from the existing Rochester location to a newly upgraded building in the city. The company cites the current general merchandise distribution center, which is the oldest leased facility, as inadequate for future requirements. The consolidation of goods at the Pottsville, Pennsylvania warehouse is anticipated to commence in spring 2027.

The updates do not entail any job cuts and Wegmans pledges to provide support during the transition for employees involved. According to Brian Olney, senior vice president of supply chain & food safety, "Modernizing our network is essential to continuing to build a safe, more efficient, and more resilient supply chain." This investment aims to equip staff with the necessary tools and facilities to better serve customers in the present while also paving the way for Wegmans' continued growth in the future.
