GPRTU to increase transport fares by 8% from Saturday, Sept. 26

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has decided to raise transport fares by 8% starting from Saturday, September 26, 2026. This decision came after a final meeting with the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, September 22, where the GPRTU negotiated the change in fares. Initially, the Union had demanded a 30% increase, citing the negative impact of not adjusting fares on drivers and transport operators.

However, during the meeting, it was revealed that the President had given a directive and there were hopes for a reduction in petroleum products. Despite discussions about maintaining the current fares, the Union insisted on some adjustment to ensure the sustainability of their operations. After much negotiation, the GPRTU agreed to an 8% increment, which will be effective from the specified date.

The Deputy Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, confirmed that the Union is currently finalizing the details of the new fares and will share the information with its members before the implementation.
