Gender Ministry commiserates with family of child who died in Cantonments fire

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has offered its deepest sympathies to the family of a two-year-old girl who was killed in a fire at a residence in Accra's Cantonments on September 20. The tragic incident claimed the life of both the young girl and her elder brother, who succumbed to his injuries at Bank Hospital. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the horrifying outcome.

The MoGCSP shared in the family's grief, along with all those affected by the tragedy. The Ministry emphasized the importance of safeguarding children from potential home hazards, advising parents and guardians to store matches, lighters, and other fire-starting items out of a child's reach. They also encouraged households to ensure electrical appliances are safe and avoid leaving young children alone.

The MoGCSP recommended that families develop emergency evacuation plans and, when possible, teach children how to respond in emergencies. The Ministry has taken note of the ongoing investigation by the GNFS into the fire's circumstances and called for the process to be completed to determine the cause. Understanding the cause would illuminate the tragedy and help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The MoGCSP stressed that protecting children from harm is a collective responsibility involving families, caregivers, communities, and relevant institutions. The Ministry expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, wishing them strength and comfort as they grapple with the loss.
