Euro 7 is not solely about exhaust emissions. This new EU vehicle emission standard goes beyond traditional exhaust norms to address brake and tire wear particles, as well as battery durability in electric vehicles. According to Katrin van Randenborgh from ADAC, Euro 7 aims to expand requirements rather than introduce significant jumps in exhaust limits for cars.

While Euro 6 values for cars remain largely unchanged, the standard will enforce stricter particulate matter measurement with a narrower range of 10 to 23 nanometers. Manufacturers will need to ensure compliance of emissions until 160,000 kilometers or eight years. Euro 7 also lays down guidelines for extended vehicle lifespan (up to ten years or 200,000 kilometers).

The norm is distinct from EU's CO2 fleet emission limits, as it primarily addresses air pollutants and particles, rather than CO2 emissions. A notable change for all drivers is the focus on non-exhaust emissions from brakes, tires, and batteries. Starting July 1, 2028, new cars will have to meet new abrasion limits for brakes and tires, while electric vehicles will have mandatory battery durability standards of 80% after five years or 100,000 kilometers, and 72% after eight years or 160,000 kilometers.

These regulations will enhance consumer protection by including battery longevity in the type approval process, according to Philipp Mathey from ACV. There is no need for owners to retrofit their existing vehicles as Euro 7 applies only to newly type-approved or registered vehicles. Existing cars with Euro 5, Euro 6, or older models remain unaffected.

New vehicle restrictions due to Euro 7 do not exist. Euro 7 does not mandate vehicle replacements and will not lead to higher prices for existing cars. Instead, it will introduce additional information for car buyers through a digital environmental pass, which can be accessed through a QR code during vehicle purchase. The pass will provide details on emissions, fuel or electricity consumption, electric range, and battery longevity. For used electric vehicle buyers, this could be particularly useful in assessing battery health.
