Former soldier’s alleged role in synagogue shooting very concerning: defence minister

Defence Minister David McGuinty expressed concern over the involvement of a former soldier in the recent synagogue shooting in Belleville, Ontario. Sean Ward, the suspect who died in the hospital after a shootout with police, was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for around five years before being released in June 2022. According to anonymous military and National Defence sources, Ward was discharged from the army due to his refusal to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Some reports also suggest that Ward had expressed antisemitic conspiracies. The motive behind the shooting, which took place during Yom Kippur services, remains unclear. McGuinty acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and the improvements made to military culture, but emphasized that there is still work to be done. The Department of National Defence confirmed Ward's background and residency but has not disclosed additional details about him.
