Former Chargers RB Austin Ekeler works out for NFC team

Former San Diego Chargers running back Austin Ekeler recently conducted a workout session for an NFC team, according to a report by NFL insider Jordan Schultz on the social media platform X. Ekeler's participation in the workout comes after he failed to secure a contract with a team prior to the start of the 2026 NFL season. The Carolina Panthers, identified as the team Ekeler is interested in joining, are in dire need of additional depth in their backfield.

This requirement stems from Jonathan Brooks' recent injury situation. Brooks underwent surgery for a core/groin injury and is projected to be sidelined for a minimum of six weeks. Prior to Brooks' injury, there were only two reliable running backs for the Panthers - Chuba Hubbard, who is currently the primary rushing threat, and AJ Dillon, who has only made eight rushing attempts in the team's first two games.

Ekeler, at 31 years old, is recognized for his versatility and dual-threat capabilities, which could significantly enhance the Panthers' running offense. During his tenure with the Chargers, spanning from 2017 to 2025, Ekeler set the NFL record for the highest number of scrimmage touchdowns in 2021 (20 total) and 2022 (18 total).

His impressive performance with the Chargers, where he spent the initial seven years of his career, makes him an attractive option for the Carolina Panthers as they search for solutions to reinforce their backfield.
