Forgot Your Android PIN? Google Is Testing a New Recovery Option

Google is experimenting with a new feature that could help users regain access to a forgotten Android PIN without resorting to a factory reset. The Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5 includes an unfinished "Unlock with Google Account" feature, which could allow users to recover their device using the associated Google Account. This feature would utilize the Google account linked to the phone and could provide a more convenient alternative to factory resetting a device.

However, Google has not confirmed if this feature will be released to users. The introduction of biometrics has made smartphones more secure, but they are still considered less reliable than a PIN, password, or pattern to verify a phone's owner. This has led to the creation of features like Factory Reset Protection (FRP), which requires a Google Account to be linked to a device after a factory reset.

The Android 17 feature discovery is similar to a previous option in Android 4.4 KitKat, which allowed users to recover access using their Google Account if they forgot their lock-screen pattern. However, Google removed this feature with Android 5.0 Lollipop and replaced it with FRP. The Android 17 feature is still in the testing phase and may not reach users.

Google has not officially announced or explained how the authentication process would work. Until Google confirms or activates the feature, users should still expect that forgetting their primary screen-lock credential may require a reset.
