Fixing the Portobello Police Station Clock

A group of volunteers met in Portobello to attempt fixing the clock in the old police station. The building, originally constructed in 1877, had been used for various purposes before being converted into a police station. The clock tower posed a challenge due to its height and steep ladders needed to reach it. The volunteers discovered that the clock was driven by a small motor through gears and shafts, with each face having its own mechanism.

They found a pawl that could be lifted to disconnect the motor, allowing them to set the time directly. After discovering a box containing a microcontroller and circuit board from 2001, they realized the clock had been modified and replaced its original mechanism. The volunteers tested the chime mechanism but were unable to activate it.

They checked the time at 4pm and found it accurate, successfully completing their mission. The group decided to disconnect the chime motor to avoid disturbing residents. After enjoying some local food and drinks, they discussed potential improvements for the community-owned police station.
