Fighting back on Trump's cruel public charge plan

President Donald Trump's administration is attempting to introduce additional obstacles for legal immigrants seeking green cards, with the support of New York Attorney General Tish James and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, among others. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a component of the Department of Homeland Security, has proposed a modification to the public charge rule, effective immediately.

This amendment suggests that individuals using fundamental government benefits such as SNAP, Medicaid, and housing assistance could be considered inadmissible when applying for a green card. In recent days, New York State and New York City, along with their allies, have initiated legal proceedings in a Manhattan federal court, challenging this proposal.

It is worth noting that the concept of public charge determinations is not novel; it has been a part of U.S. laws since even before the nation gained its independence. However, the distinction lies in the administration's intention to broaden the scope of this analysis beyond its original parameters.
