Farm state Republicans feel the pressure from rising diesel prices

Skyrocketing diesel prices are causing headaches for Republican candidates as they approach the midterms elections. Diesel, which powers both the global economy and the American heartland, has hit record highs due to the escalation in the Middle East war. This has left Republican candidates feeling the pressure and considering drastic measures that economists warn could only exacerbate the pain for consumers.

Republicans in key states like Iowa and Michigan have called for ending exports of diesel refined in the United States to bolster domestic supply. President Donald Trump has shown support for this idea, although his energy secretary dismissed the notion of a "blanket ban" on diesel exports.

The increase in diesel prices has been attributed to the Middle East's heavy involvement in oil production, as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which reduced the world's oil supply by approximately 20%. Additionally, attacks on Russian refineries have taken between 800,000 to 1 million barrels of diesel per day off the market.

The soaring diesel prices have become a hot issue in the campaign trail, with Democrats like Senator Roger Marshall and Representative Jen Kiggans vowing to tackle the issue. On the Republican side, contenders like Senator John Thune and Representative Ashley Hinton have also proposed ending diesel exports, hoping it would help alleviate the burden on American consumers. However, the proposal has split the Republican party.
