Expert notes central locations in Omagh bomb inquiry

A UK-based data analyst has provided a presentation detailing the connections between those suspected of carrying out the 1998 Omagh bombing, which killed 29 people. Mark Safranauskas, who has over 20 years of experience with Greater Manchester Police, previously worked on cases such as the Manchester Arena suicide bombing in 2017 that claimed 22 lives.

The inquiry has already identified up to 14 men as potential plotters in the 1998 atrocity. During the presentation, Safranauskas highlighted the central role of Coes Road and the Bay Estate in Dundalk as a key location where there was significant contact between the key individuals under investigation. He explained that being listed as a key individual does not necessarily prove direct involvement in the bombing.

The inquiry team relied on Safranauskas's analysis, which incorporated various sources such as inquiry summaries, police documents, mobile phone reports, and presentations from law enforcement agencies. Safranauskas will also present a report on the attribution of mobile telephone numbers to specific individuals, as the inquiry has connected phones to those involved in the bomb and the accompanying car.
