Eritreans planning ‘revolution’ in Tel Aviv warehouse: Haaretz report

An Eritrean opposition group is organizing from a Tel Aviv warehouse to overthrow President Isaias Afwerki and establish democratic rule, according to an Israeli media report. Known as Brigade Nhamedu, the group plans to build a global political organization to mobilize Eritrean exiles and eventually return to Eritrea to replace the current government.

The movement, led by Beyene Gerezgiher, a figure based in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, has established an international council with around 1,300 members participating in a recent vote held in Nes Ziona, Israel. Brigade Nhamedu is supported by insiders within Eritrea, including government and military figures, though these claims have not been independently verified by Haaretz.

The group aims to establish a base in neighboring Ethiopia and communicate with people inside Eritrea. The movement's leaders, Atakliti Abraham Michael and Mulue Sultan, both former Eritrean residents, have expressed the desire to return to their homeland despite living abroad. However, the Israeli government has been strained in its relations with Eritrea, with the latter distancing itself from Israel after closing its embassy in Asmara, the capital, in 2022.
