This volume is equivalent to the fuel needed for roughly 1,000 Boeing 787-9 flights between Düsseldorf and Abu Dhabi each year. This is one of the largest such agreements announced so far.
The initiative is driven by an EU regulation that mandates an increasing share of climate-friendly fuel for European airports in the coming years. Production of the fuel is set to begin in the early 2030s at a Danish facility operated by Arcadia eFuels. The plant is expected to have a capacity of around 80,000 metric tons annually.
The kerosene, also known as eSAF (electricity-based sustainable aviation fuel), is produced using renewable electricity, sustainably generated hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. Compared to conventional aviation fuel, the use of eSAF could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 98 percent, according to the companies.
