El Nino rain transforms Chile’s Atacama Desert into vast carpet of flowers after record downpour

Chile's Atacama Desert, known as one of the driest places on Earth, has transformed into a vibrant carpet of flowers after the El Nino climate phenomenon brought heavy rainfall. Millions of seeds and bulbs, dormant in the usually parched soil, have awakened due to the unusual downpour. The heavy rains, which reached 180 millimeters in some areas, are unprecedented and have provided a new lease on life to the region's biodiversity.

This phenomenon, expected to peak in October, will cover around 15,000 hectares with an array of colorful blooms. While El Nino has caused devastation in other parts of Chile, Pizarro, head of Atacama biodiversity for Chile's forestry body CONAF, emphasizes that it also generates life. The desert is now teeming with insects, snails, birds, reptiles, and mammals, including bees that are busy with pollination.

The unique aspect of this event is not just the occurrence of such a diverse floral display, but also the sheer extent of the blooming area, which is larger and more varied than many other desert regions. Tourists have flocked to the area, snapping pictures of the breathtaking scenery, including potential rainbows over red sunsets.

However, Pizarro cautions against excessive damage from human activities, urging visitors to stick to established paths and leave their pets at home. He poetically describes the yellow blooms as a source of national pride, noting that while other deserts bloom after rain, the scale and species diversity found in Atacama are unparalleled.
