Differing views, observations are normal part of deliberation in any institution: ECI on reports of internal friction

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has dismissed claims of internal friction between Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, stating that differing views and observations are a normal part of any institution's decision-making process. The Indian Express reported on September 23, 2026, that the two Commissioners had formally voiced objections at least 14 times over the past ten months, alleging centralization of the electoral rolls and other concerns.

However, the ECI countered that all decisions, including the Selection of Representatives (SIR), were made unanimously and with the approval of both Commissioners and the Chief Election Commissioner. The Commission emphasized that suggestions from the Commissioners aimed at enhancing electoral processes were part of standard administrative practice.

Opposition leaders have accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of pursuing a "one-man autocracy" and demanded his removal.
