Defense minister, top U.S. envoy discuss OPCON transfer, air base relocation

Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul and the top U.S. envoy to Korea, Michelle Steel, held a meeting on Wednesday to address crucial alliance matters, including the transition of operational control (OPCON) during wartime and the relocation of a joint military air base. This discussion took place following Kang's inauguration on Tuesday, as the United States and South Korea confront numerous security challenges together, with the OPCON transition being a primary concern.

During the meeting, the two sides deliberated on pressing issues, notably the OPCON transfer and the relocation of the Gwangju military airport. They pledged to maintain close communication to enhance the bilateral alliance in a forward-looking and mutually advantageous manner, according to a statement from the defense ministry.

South Korea aims to regain OPCON from the United States before the five-year term of the Lee Jae Myung administration concludes in 2030, or even sooner, potentially as early as next year. However, disagreements have emerged between the allies concerning the timing of the OPCON transition, with the U.S. expressing reservations about proceeding too hastily. The Lee government is actively advocating for a swift transfer.
