Commanders' defensive futility on full display in Week 2 vs Cowboys

Fans had high hopes for the Washington Commanders as the 2026 season began. However, their dreams were quickly dashed on Sunday during a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Quarterback Jayden Daniels was just one play away from tying the game before halftime when left guard Chris Paul stepped on his foot, causing Daniels to trip, hit the ground and dislocate his elbow. This marked the beginning of a season of defensive struggles for Washington.

The Commanders entered the season with several new starters on defense, including edge rushers Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson, linebacker Sonny Styles and safety Nick Cross. While the defense looked improved in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, it completely regressed against the Cowboys in Week 2. The voids in coverage were evident, and Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott took full advantage.

He completed 26 of 31 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns, completing his NFC East dominance, especially against the Commanders.

Defensive coordinator Daronte Jones seemed less aggressive against the Cowboys compared to the Eagles, relying heavily on Washington's four-man rush to generate pressure. With no progress in this area, Prescott had an easy day. The secondary also remained a question mark heading into the season, but the hope was that a stronger pass rush would ease the burden on the back end.

With the Commanders at 0-2 and facing the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks next, the pressure is on to make fundamental changes to their defense.
