Chris Spatola, basketball analyst and son-in-law of retired Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, dies at 47

Chris Spatola, a college basketball analyst and son-in-law of legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, passed away on Tuesday night at the age of 47. Duke men's basketball expressed their deep sorrow over his loss, describing him as a beloved Army veteran, coach, broadcaster, and cherished friend to the Duke Basketball family. Spatola, a two-time All-Patriot League player during his time at Army (1998-2002), later earned commendation medals for his service, including during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He worked on Krzyzewski's Duke staff from 2007 to 2012, serving as a key contributor during the 2010 NCAA championship season.

Spatola was married to Krzyzewski's daughter, Jamie, an author who collaborated with her father on several of his books. Following his coaching tenure at Duke, he transitioned to a role as a color commentator for ESPN and TNT, as well as SiriusXM radio. ESPN commentator Jay Bilas, a fellow Duke player, expressed his devastation over Spatola's death, praising his character, humility, and exceptional basketball knowledge.

Bilas described Spatola as a selfless and devoted family man, emphasizing that his focus was always on the game, players, coaches, and fans. The Krzyzewski family deeply appreciated the outpouring of love, thoughts, and prayers they received during this challenging time, requesting privacy for their family members coping with the heartbreaking loss.
