China’s US$1.77b rice eel industry eyes global markets

In central China's Xiantao, a thriving rice eel industry generates over US$1.77 billion annually. Rice eels, also known as Asian swamp eels, are a staple in Chinese cuisine and highly valued for their taste and nutritional benefits. The industry began in Xiantao's village ponds over three decades ago, transforming farming communities and lifting many out of poverty.

In Xiantao alone, over a billion rice eels are produced annually, enough to feed nearly every household in China. Thanks to advances in technology and government support, the industry can now produce year-round, with controlled environments and precise water quality management. However, the real challenge lies in expanding overseas markets.

So far, Xiantao has exported more than 125 tonnes of rice eel products to 10 countries, including North America, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. To meet growing demand, Xiantao is developing a digital platform for traceability and exploring new technologies such as unmanned boats to automate tasks and increase efficiency.
