Carlos Queiroz urges Ghana to stay humble in AFCON pursuit

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has advised Ghana to maintain humility as they embark on their pursuit of a fifth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. The four-time champions are set to begin their bid to reclaim the continental crown after enduring a challenging period in recent years, marked by consecutive group-stage exits and ultimately missing out on the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

The Black Stars, who last won the trophy in 1982, will kick off their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign with away and home fixtures against Côte d'Ivoire and The Gambia. Speaking to Ghana FA Media, Queiroz emphasized the importance of striking a balance between ambition and humility, stating that the team must focus on qualifying before discussing the possibility of winning the trophy.

He acknowledged their recent history, noting that Ghana has gone without an AFCON title for 44 years, with the Black Stars finishing as runners-up in 1992, 2010, and 2015. The team is expected to depart Accra on September 23 for their opening qualifier against Côte d'Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix on September 24. Following this, Ghana will host The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 27, as Queiroz aims to kick off their Group C campaign with a strong showing.

The September international window will close with a high-profile friendly against Morocco at the Grand Stade de Tanger on October 4, providing Ghana with another chance to build momentum as they strive to return to Africa's premier football tournament.
