Despite Western's current 2-1 record, Danielson's assertion is based on his personal assessment of a controversial game against the University of Michigan.

The controversy arose on September 5, when Michigan's Hail Mary pass attempt on the final play of a game was ruled incomplete after Western Michigan's defensive player touched the ball while out of bounds. However, after officials added one second to the clock, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood connected on a second Hail Mary attempt, securing the victory.

Danielson argues that this decision was incorrect and that Western Michigan should be considered undefeated in their account. The Football Oversight Committee later acknowledged the error in the final play, but as the game had already been declared over, the outcome could not be overturned.

With both teams currently outside the top 25 rankings in the College Football Playoff standings, the game at Waldo Stadium carries significant implications. Boise State enters the match at 2-1, having previously lost to Oregon and won against Memphis and South Dakota. Western Michigan, on the other hand, has won two consecutive games, defeating Monmouth and Rice.
