Bentley unveils Torcal electric SUV with Merino wool interior

Bentley Motors Ltd. has unveiled its first fully electric car, the Torcal SUV, which boasts a Merino-wool interior trim. The British luxury automaker aims to boost profitability and carve out a market for high-end electric vehicles. Priced at £173,000 ($230,000) in the UK, the Torcal is the least expensive Bentley model, targeting younger consumers, including first-time buyers.

The vehicle comes in two variants, a standard model and a more performance-oriented S model, making it Bentley's fourth model line. Designed, engineered, and built in Crewe, the Torcal draws support from UK-based suppliers. It generates up to 888 PS and 1,350 Nm of torque, propelling the SUV from 0-60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. The electric motor system comprises two permanent magnet synchronous motors and a high voltage battery consisting of 192 lithium-ion pouch cells, with a 113 kWh net capacity.

The Torcal boasts a range of up to 375 miles, with a 10-80% charge time of 16 minutes at 400 kW. The electric SUV introduces cutting-edge interior materials, including the world's first 100% Merino wool automotive fabric, developed in collaboration with Somerset-based Fox Brothers. Other unique features include Ombré Walnut by Mulliner, created from up to 1,000 individually selected walnut off-cuts and craft paper.

The Torcal's debut follows criticism faced by Ferrari over its first electric vehicle, the Luce, for its design. Luxury automakers like Rolls-Royce are experiencing a decline in demand for their electric vehicles.
