Bats sighted at Abu Simbel Temple leads to concern amongst tourists – but are they a threat?

During their visits to the Abu Simbel Temple complex in southern Aswan, tourists recently observed clusters of bats nesting in the elevated parts of the historic monument, especially on the towering stone ceilings. An official from the Aswan Antiquities Sector informed Al-Masry Al-Youm that such occurrences are not unforeseen, as the bats tend to be more active in the summer when they seek dark, humid spaces suitable for roosting.

The official emphasized that the bat population remains relatively small and is restricted to the upper ceiling areas of the temple. Evaluations have confirmed that the bats have not caused any structural or visual damage to the ancient walls, carvings, or reliefs. To address the issue, the antiquities authorities have contacted pest control departments to explore non-invasive methods of deterring the bats without causing harm to the delicate site.

The focus is on preserving the well-being of both visitors and employees, steering clear of strong or pungent odors and hazardous chemicals that could damage the ancient stone components. The authorities are presently examining the use of ultrasonic repeller devices to gently discourage the bats from nesting inside the sanctuary while preventing any physical or environmental disruption.
