Americans Fear AI Will Make the World Worse, Love It Anyway

A new study by Gallup and Microsoft reveals that while many people worldwide have a generally positive view of artificial intelligence (AI), Americans and some other Western nations harbor more negative feelings towards the technology. The survey, which covered 37 countries, found that most people were aware of AI tools, but only a median of 43% used them daily.

Among daily users, there was a strong correlation between increased AI usage and greater trust in its results, more positive feelings, and belief in its potential to improve the future. However, the relationship between trust, adoption, and worry remains complex and not fully understood. The study found that in the U.S., along with Egypt and Palestine, negative emotions towards AI outweighed the positive.

Pablo Diego-Rosell, a senior scientist at Gallup, believes this phenomenon, dubbed the "Paradox of the Worried West," is a uniquely Western issue. The survey suggests that trust in AI's accuracy is lower than optimism about its potential, and worry persists in some countries. Diego-Rosell suggests that factors such as existing anxiety, stress, or other negative emotions may influence how people perceive AI, and that the perception of AI is far more complicated than simply being for or against it.
