AG says Negeri Sembilan state secretary and legal adviser remain in office, must continue duties

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Former law minister Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar has called for a swift resolution to the ongoing dispute over the Negeri Sembilan royal institution. The former minister emphasized that the legal questions involved should be addressed through the legal process rather than public debate or sentiment, as the dispute encompasses adat (customary practices), state law, and the Federal Constitution.

Syed Hamid emphasized that the courts should expedite necessary hearings to resolve these legal questions, stating that conflicting rights claims between parties necessitate determination by the courts. He urged those responsible for the matter, such as the Attorney-General and the government, to carry out their respective responsibilities without being seen as interference, unless determined otherwise by a court.

Syed Hamid also urged all parties to refrain from making conflicting public statements, as these could heighten public anxiety and hinder the attainment of a reasonable resolution. He highlighted that Malaysians and even outsiders are now confused by the dispute, which has transcended its initial internal nature and become a matter of public interest.

Syed Hamid cautioned that this uncertainty could negatively impact Malaysian politics and public perception. He stressed that any action related to a person's position or removal from office must adhere to the procedures and provisions outlined in the Constitution and relevant laws.
