ADDRESSING GROWING ECONOMIC HARDSHIP

The Bola Tinubu administration's economic reforms have resulted in soaring transportation, food, and service costs, and a significant decline in real wages, aggravating poverty in Nigeria. Despite the government's attempts to address the issue, increased allocations from fuel subsidy removal and the integration of the Naira exchange rates have failed to improve governance.

Prices of goods and services are steadily increasing, leading to an unlivable situation for millions of Nigerians who live on a meager amount that fails to meet even basic survival needs.

Nigeria's high poverty rate exacerbates the situation, with limited access to pipe borne water in many states, frequent deaths due to poor sanitation and inadequate healthcare facilities, and decrepit educational institutions with insufficient staffing. Despite the economic challenges, some states are still unpaid for workers' salaries and pensions and have not implemented the National Minimum Wage, signed into law two years ago.

The federal government's reliance on middlemen for the rising costs of goods and services is partially true, but the nation's monetary and fiscal policies are either misguided or poorly executed, causing more distress for the populace. Recent warnings from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) indicate that over 17 million people in nine conflict-ridden northern states face severe hunger, an issue that transcends borders and affects the entire nation.

Public sector workers are demanding that the federal government stabilize petrol prices at N500 per litre and provide emergency palliatives and wage awards, urging authorities to take swift action to alleviate the economic hardship endured by the masses. While acknowledging that global socio-economic challenges exist, the worsening conditions in Nigeria make it particularly dire, demanding immediate measures to ease the unbearable cost of living and restore hope among the suffering population.
