Aces chase another title as Becky Hammon warns: ‘We’re not a finished product’

The Las Vegas Aces have never had an issue securing talented players, consistently building a WNBA powerhouse. Yet, their triumphs are attributed to more than just star power. The team's success stems from mental fortitude that helps them triumph over adversity, some self-inflicted and others imposed by circumstances.

Now, as favorites to win the title heading into the playoffs, the Aces face numerous hurdles that could hinder their pursuit of more history. Head coach Becky Hammon remains vigilant, never complacent and continually pushing for improvement. She encourages her players, applauding their accomplishments while acknowledging areas for enhancement and striving for greater sharpness on the court.

Though the Aces have clinched home-court advantage through the first round of the playoffs, securing at least the third seed, they would ascend to the second seed with a win against Phoenix and a loss by Golden State to Los Angeles. That outcome would guarantee home court through at least two playoff rounds.

Despite their impressive regular-season performance, tying Chicago for the best record and going 8-2 in the playoffs without an elimination game, the Aces' title in 2022 was marred by injuries. Six-time All-Star guard Chelsea Gray and post player Kiah Stokes sustained foot injuries in the Finals against New York, which the Aces overcame to secure back-to-back championships.

However, their most formidable challenge arose during last season's title run when they struggled, suffering a 53-point loss to Minnesota, dropping their record to 14-14. But they quickly regrouped and won their final 16 regular-season games before advancing to the playoffs.

The Aces are now playing in the shadow of the Lynx, the No. 1 seed and leading favorites to win the championship. On betting boards, the Aces hold second-best odds, boasting a six-game winning streak against non-qualifying opponents. Their season record against postseason teams is a modest 11-10. Coach Hammon admits there's always room for improvement, emphasizing the team's commitment to being their best.
