A viral audio, BJP councillors’ husbands and two money deal allegations: what Chandigarh MC controversy is all about

An IT professional and a husband of a sitting BJP councillor are at the center of a controversy in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC). The IT professional reportedly confronted the husband, demanding Rs 25 lakh for the approval of a civic body agenda. The BJP councillor's husband allegedly admitted to receiving the money, with a portion being his personal share.

Meanwhile, a viral audio clip has surfaced, allegedly involving the husband of another BJP councillor. The audio allegedly discusses an illegal transaction of Rs 80 lakh during the mayoral elections. The allegations have been raised by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who have submitted a complaint to the Chandigarh Director General of Police (DGP) requesting an investigation, forensic examination, and registration of an FIR.

The BJP councillors deny the allegations, with some claiming that their husbands were merely discussing weapons during the phone call. The AAP has sought the involvement of an SIT or an independent investigating agency to probe the matter. Legal experts suggest that the complainant can file a petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court if evidence exists to prove that the election was won through unfair means. The police can take action only if the allegations disclose a cognisable offence.
