16 child cases in Padawan referred under Child Act this year, says Puncak Borneo MP

KUCHING (Sept 24): Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin emphasized the importance of communities playing a more active role in identifying and addressing social issues, such as child abuse, domestic violence and neglect, at an early stage. He stressed the need for cooperation beyond the government and Social Welfare Department, involving families, community leaders, government agencies, authorities, educational and health institutions, as well as non-governmental organizations.

Willie highlighted that early intervention and awareness are crucial in effectively addressing social problems, as each person has a role to play in protecting the community's safety and welfare.

The Social Welfare Act Advocacy Programme 2026, organized by the Kuching Social Welfare Office and Puncak Borneo Parliamentary Office, aimed to educate communities about their rights, responsibilities and available assistance channels. Willie pointed out that social legislation is not solely about enforcement but also an essential tool to ensure vulnerable groups receive their rights, assistance and appropriate services.

He mentioned key laws like the Child Act 2001, Domestic Violence Act 1994 and Persons with Disabilities Act 2008.

During the 2026 fiscal year, 37 domestic violence cases were reported to the Kuching Divisional Social Welfare Office, compared to 43 cases in 2025 and 32 cases in 2024. The MP also mentioned that 16 child cases were referred under the Child Act 2001 in the Padawan area this year, underscoring the need for continuous attention and action to protect various vulnerable groups.

Willie urged participants of the advocacy programme to serve as information disseminators in their respective communities, emphasizing that a more informed community can respond appropriately to social issues. The program also aimed to foster sharing experiences, exchanging views and strengthening cooperation between various agencies and communities.

Willie stressed the importance of protecting children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and victims of violence, ensuring they receive the necessary protection and support.
