US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed Washington's commitment to its defense obligations with Saudi Arabia amid escalating tensions between the kingdom and Yemen's Houthi rebels. In an interview with Fox News, Rubio stated, "We have a defense agreement with Saudi Arabia. We intend to live up to our commitments on it. We will."
The remarks come as the Houthi group intensifies its offensive against Saudi Arabia with missile and drone strikes targeting key locations within the kingdom. Saudi officials reported intercepting a ballistic missile headed towards Riyadh, while residents witnessed explosions and fires near the capital's airport. The Houthi militants claimed responsibility for attacks on Yanbu, Taif, Baysh, and Farasan, as they advance towards the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
In response to the ongoing conflict, Saudi Arabia has intensified airstrikes and is seeking additional support from its allies.
