US warns Australia's social media algorithm reforms risk 'facilitating censorship'

The United States has expressed serious concerns over Australia's proposed social media algorithm reforms, warning that the legislation could inadvertently facilitate censorship. The draft laws, introduced by Australia's center-left Labor government, would mandate social media platforms to provide users with a default algorithm-recommended content feed, alongside an option to opt out and follow accounts of their choice.

The US Embassy in Canberra took issue with the proposed law's intent to regulate content management on platforms, stating that it could potentially impose rigid, one-size-fits-all design requirements. This includes forced chronological feeds or opt-in recommendation systems, which the US deems problematic.

Beyond Australia's borders, the US warns that the mandated algorithm design requirements may influence what users see, say, and hear globally. The US Embassy urged Australian officials to clearly define how "harm" and "risk" would be determined and by whom, cautioning that vague definitions risk enabling viewpoint-based censorship.

They cautioned that if Australia compels platforms to aggressively filter algorithmic content, it could result in the suppression of protected speech and the reduction of a disfavored speaker or media source's reach, which the US would view as facilitating censorship.

This comes amid Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's promotion of Australia's technology reform agenda during his attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The Australian government is currently seeking feedback on the draft "Digital Duty of Care" legislation before introducing it to Parliament this year.
